A Bike Power Meter Using The Sensors In Your Smartphone
The Cykelstrom Bike/Bicycle Power Meter App for Android smartphones uses existing sensors with the global positioning (GPS) receiver to measure, calculate and display an estimate of power performance for the cyclist with or without external sensors.
Most smartphones have built in accelerometers, gyroscopes, and a compass. Cykelstrom uses information from these sensors to measure and calculate the opposing forces to motion which result in power dissipation while riding.
No additional sensors are necessary, however if you already have external Bluetooth® compliant sensors, Cykelstrom will use them to calculate the power estimate. Cykelstrom has the ability to connect and use: Cadence, Speed, Heart Rate and Power Sensors. No external sensors? No worries, Cykelstrom uses the GPS in your smartphone for speed and location.
Cykelstrom uses real time wind speed and direction information at your current position to calculate wind resistance or assistance using your smartphone’s internet connection. If internet data is not available, the user can manually enter wind speed and direction.

Observe Your Power And Other Training Data
While you ride, Cykelstrom displays and records:
- Total Power Estimate in watts with selectable averages of 1, 3, 5, 10 and 20 seconds
- Power due to wind resistance or assistance; see how the wind at your back helps you.
- Power due to rolling resistance, an estimate that shows you how much power is due to friction where the rubber meets the road.
- Power due to percent grade, an estimate of how much power to overcome that hill or assist you while going down hill.
- Speed in MPH or KPH
- Cadence in RPM (extra sensor required)
- Heart Rate in BPM (extra sensor required)
- Percent Grade, estimate of grade while you ride.
- Elevation Gain, estimate of elevation gain in Feet or Meters
- Total distance in miles or kilometers
- Heading information using GPS or magnetic compass
- Elapsed ride time and Lap Time
When you pause, Cykelstrom displays the data averages for your ride.
Upload Power Meter Data For Analysis
Cykelstrom automatically uploads your data to Strava® when your ride is finished if you choose. You can also manually upload your data to a favorite app with a Global Position Exchange (.GPX) file or import your data to a spreadsheet for even more detailed analysis with a comma separated value (.CSV) file.
In addition to all of the above, the the spreadsheet import file also records:
- Wind Bearing and Wind Velocity
- Location information (GPS coordinates)
- Altitude
Cykelstrom displays your performance data while you ride and logs detailed information to upload to your favorite analysis app or spreadsheet.
